Sony Discman D-88
13Jan09
I was recently navigating the web for all kinds of old tech stuff that I once wanted.
1. I didn’t really think that many people shared this passion with me, but as I watch the bids on eBay, I realize that I’m not alone.
1. I had thought about starting a blog, but hadn’t really found a “cause” to dedicate myself to.
Well, 1+1 is 2. Here I go, I’ll start posting about things that I find cool and we’ll see where it goes. I’ll kick off with the Sony Discman D-88. This is by far one of the most interesting portable CD player that I have ever come accross.
As you can see this player was designed to hold a CD single and normal size CDs come out of the corner. Last I saw one on the market was the US eBay and it went for about 50 USD.

I’m just about to finish a book called The Ultimate History of Video Games. It has plenty of information on old vg hardware. You might find the book interesting
Sounds fascinating! Keep me in the loop. I’m especially interested in old school hardware and simple graphics.
I actually have a Sony Discman D-88. I also have some old Rock and Blues 3″ Cd’s. I am interested in selling of the right price?
Nice Blog, Keep it Going. I be checking in from time to time.
James.
Those are neat gadgets. I’d love to get my hands on one. I still have a few CD3s. I remember checking one out back in the day at the local Good Guys! Couldn’t afford such things at the time. But since then I’ve bought a D-555 from the same era and I was just listening to a few CDs on a D-9 which I got at a flea market last weekend for five bucks. The thing looks new and sound terrific! Fun stuff. After realizing how much better these things reproduce sound than mp3 players (with good headphones) I may be going retro. I can see why there’s a feeding frenzy right now for the “classic” Discmen. A cherry D-555 with box and a bunch of accessories just sold on eBay for… wait for it… $1,425! Crazy world.
Hi Wayne,
The D-555 looks pretty sweet with all those LCD screens! 1500 bucks is quite a price, though. I think it’s way more fun to make “finds” like you did at the flea market.
Yeah, the D-555 is a great machine. Very clean sound though if you use the DSP EQ it introduces weird artifact noise, luckily only barely noticeable during fades in and out. Sadly mine is suffering from the spindle motor problem endemic to the old Discmen so it’s in mothballs till I can find a replacement. Same thing with a D-303 I got at a flea market. Hope your D-88 is still working fine! Bummer that all of these players will eventually die unless someone starts manufacturing spare parts.
